Community History
Our Community
At the heart of the thriving Jersey City waterfront is Newport, an unparalleled live, work, play community composed of diverse residential communities, waterfront parks, restaurants, and Fortune 500 companies. Newport’s history begins with Samuel LeFrak and Melvin Simon’s dream that the once-abandoned waterfront could become a vibrant and welcoming community. This dream became a promise in 1986 when construction broke ground.
Over the next decade, the waterfront was completely transformed. New water and sewer lines were built, city streets and utility lines were added, and through hard work, ingenuity, and visionary leadership, a community began to take shape. Today, Newport is considered one of the most successful master planned communities in the world with over 12,000 residents in 22 residential buildings. Over 50,000 people work in Newport each day and we’re still growing.
A Look Back at
Looking at Newport today, it’s hard to imagine that only 30 years ago the site was considered a place where nobody could live. All of that changed when Samuel LeFrak and Melvin Simon saw the potential for a new, planned waterfront community.
